New Orleans Museums
Take a walk through history and visit the museums & homes that chronicle our past. There are more than 45 museums throughout the city. Choose from History museums, Mardi Gras museums, historic homes, nature museums, or religious museums.
New Orleans Area Plantations
Plantations were once the mainstays of a regional agrarian economy, as well as the bastions of a genteel culture. Now they are major tourist attractions offering windows into a bygone past. They are the plantations, and in southern Louisiana there are a good number of them within easy driving distance of New Orleans.
New Orleans Cemeteries
Only in New Orleans, which is unique in so many ways, could cemeteries be major tourist attractions. However, because the city is built on a swamp, the deceased have to be buried above ground here in elaborate stone crypts and mausoleums. Over time the cemeteries, with elaborate sculptures and other decorative artwork embellishing the tombs, have come to come to resemble small villages. They are known by the nickname of “Cities of the Dead.”
The most famous cemetery, St. Louis Cemetery #1, is walking distance from the French Quarter and the Downtown area. Located on historic Basin Street, it is the burial place of Marie Laveau, the legendary “voodoo queen.”
Cafe Du Monde
Since 1862 Café Du Monde has been the original French Market coffee stand serving cafe au lait and beignets. A New Orleans landmark, located directly across from Jackson Square and the Pontalba apartments, Cafe du Monde offers the original beignet, the state doughnut of Louisiana.
