More than 100 spills are reported each day in the United States, and developing a spill reporting strategy before a spill occurs is critical to meeting the various requirements of CERCLA, EPCRA, Clean Water Act, Clean Air Act, and others laws.

Our spill course includes focused training, group discussions, real world examples, and class exercises. The course focuses on the evaluation, documentation, and notification requirements for spills under CERCLA Section 103, EPCRA Section 304, Clean Water Act navigable waters, and The Clean Air Act’s general duty clause. Organizational approaches for preparing for and planning for a release event are presented, along with strategies for dealing with overlapping and differing spill notification requirements.
A workshop is used to address typical spill estimation calculations and decision processes to apply when incomplete information on a spill event is available and immediate compliance actions and decisions must be made. Students receive bound printed course materials that serve as a useful desk reference.

Malia Crane is a registered Professional Engineer (Georgia) and an EPA Certified CAMEO Instructor. She has provided EPA Mass Decontamination Training and instruction on Mapping for Application for Response and Planning of Local Operational Tasks (MARPLOT), which plots chemical plumes and aids responders in determining evacuation zones. She was an emergency responder under the EPA START program to Hurricane Rita and she provided sampling and decontamination support to EPA in response to the 2001 bioterrorism attack at the U.S. Senate office buildings.
Mark McDaniel is a Certified Professional Analytical Chemist with more than a dozen years of experience, specializing in method development, data validation, instrument repair, QA/QC oversight, QAPP development, acquiring state and national laboratory certifications, and procurement of laboratory services under Federal guidelines. He has performed several treatability studies and managed multiple enforcement and removal actions under RCRA, TSCA, and SPCC guidelines. As a Primary Responder for EPA Region 8, he has worked on more than 25 emergency responses, as well as trained with federal, state, and local agencies.
Joe Baer is a registered Professional Geologist (Florida, Georgia and Kentucky) and the Program Director for TechLaw’s EPA Superfund Technical Assessment and Response Team (START) contracts. He has overseen and/or participated in multiple START responses involving Preliminary Assessments, Site Investigations, Site Inspections Prioritizations, Expanded Site Investigations, Hazard Ranking System (HRS) scoring packages, site screening activities, and removal site assessments. He has also participated in on-call emergency response to spills and releases of hazardous materials; acts of terrorism involving weapons of mass destruction; and spill prevention control and countermeasures (SPCC)/FRP Plan review.
